Formula 1 plans 2030 V8 turbo hybrid engine regulations

Formula 1 is planning a significant shift for its 2030 power unit regulations, moving toward a 3.0-liter V8 engine configuration. While earlier plans focused on naturally aspirated engines, recent reports suggest the introduction of turbochargers, potentially utilizing two turbos—one for each cylinder bank.

The proposed engine aims to produce over 1,000 hp while significantly reducing weight. A primary goal is to cut approximately 50 kg from the current power unit assembly to address driver concerns regarding vehicle mass. The new setup will also feature a reduced hybrid component, moving from the current 350 kW system to a 100 kW electric motor.

Technical discussions also highlight the use of turbochargers as a method to manage engine noise. By acting as a natural silencer, the turbochargers could help the sport comply with decibel limits required for modern street circuits. Additionally, F1 is considering a ‘push-to-pass’ system, similar to IndyCar, to help drivers manage the increased power.
