Formula 1 2030 engine regulation developments
Overview
Formula 1 stakeholders, including the FIA and engine manufacturers, are developing a framework for new power unit regulations intended for introduction around 2030. The proposed shift involves moving to a 3.0-liter V8 engine configuration.
To address weight concerns, the new regulations aim to reduce the power unit assembly by approximately 50 kilograms. This will be achieved by reducing the role of electrification, with the electric motor output potentially dropping from the current 350 kW to approximately 100 kW.
While there was consideration for naturally aspirated engines to achieve a traditional sound, the current plan includes turbochargers to help comply with noise restrictions at street circuits like Melbourne, Miami, and Las Vegas. Technical discussions suggest the use of two turbochargers, one for each cylinder bank, to act as a natural silencer. Additionally, officials are considering an IndyCar-style ‘push-to-pass’ system to enhance overtaking and help drivers manage increased power.
