Formula 1 to reduce Grand Prix race distances from 2027

The Formula 1 Commission has approved significant regulatory changes set to take effect in the 2027 season. The most prominent adjustment is the reduction of standard Grand Prix race distances from 305 kilometers to 290 kilometers. This change, which translates to approximately two or three fewer laps per race depending on the circuit, is a technical response to new power unit regulations. Specifically, an increase in fuel flow for internal combustion engines will require higher fuel consumption, and reducing the race distance avoids the need for larger, heavier fuel tanks.

Additional changes include the removal of the strict three-hour limit for races interrupted by weather or incidents. Instead, a fixed end-time for all track activities will be established, providing greater flexibility for organizers to complete races while maintaining a maximum of two hours of actual racing time. The Commission also agreed to eliminate gearbox homologation for 2027 to allow suppliers more development freedom.

These decisions, presided over by F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali and FIA Director Nikolas Tombazis, still require formal ratification by the FIA World Motor Sport Council. The 2027 season is also expected to feature an expanded Sprint race format, increasing from six to ten events.
