Formula 2 announces supersized Baku race format amid F1 calendar uncertainty

Formula 2 has announced a “supersized” race weekend format for its 2026 round in Baku, Azerbaijan, scheduled for September 24–26. The modified schedule includes one free practice session, two qualifying sessions, one sprint race, and two feature races. F2 CEO Bruno Michel stated the decision was made in agreement with promoters because F2 is the only support series for the Azerbaijan Formula 1 Grand Prix that weekend.

This format change comes amid significant uncertainty regarding the conclusion of the Formula 1 season. Due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, there is growing concern that the scheduled final rounds in Qatar and Abu Dhabi may be cancelled. Imola has been placed on standby as a contingency location for the season finale if the Middle Eastern races cannot proceed.

Additionally, the Azerbaijan Grand Prix itself will deviate from tradition by being held on Saturday, September 26, instead of Sunday. This shift is intended to avoid clashing with Azerbaijan’s national Remembrance Day on September 27.
