2026 motorsport regulatory and structural changes

The 2026 racing season is undergoing significant structural and technical changes across various tiers of motorsport.

In Formula 1, new regulations will introduce a new engine era featuring increased electrical components and sustainable fuels. Technical updates include active aerodynamics to replace DRS, with cars designed to be smaller and lighter. The grid is set to expand to 11 teams, including the debut of Cadillac and Audi’s transition of Sauber. Broadcasting plans for the season involve a mix of free-to-air and pay-TV services, including coverage for a new Madrid Grand Prix.

Formula 2 has announced a “supersized” race weekend format for its round in Baku, Azerbaijan, scheduled for September 24–26, 2026. The modified schedule includes one free practice session, two qualifying sessions, one sprint race, and two feature races. F2 CEO Bruno Michel stated the decision was made in agreement with promoters because F2 is the only support series for the Azerbaijan Formula 1 Grand Prix that weekend.

This format change comes amid uncertainty regarding the conclusion of the Formula 1 season. Due to ongoing conflict in the Middle East, there is concern that the scheduled final rounds in Qatar and Abu Dhabi may be cancelled, leading Imola to be placed on standby as a contingency location. Additionally, the Azerbaijan Grand Prix will be held on Saturday, September 26, rather than Sunday, to avoid clashing with Azerbaijan’s national Remembrance Day on September 27.
