Formula 2 unveils new 2027–2029 racing car at Monza
FIA Formula 2 has officially unveiled its new racing car, which will be used for the 2027, 2028, and 2029 seasons. The reveal took place in the Formula 1 paddock at Monza.
To manage costs and ensure financial sustainability, the new car will retain the Dallara chassis introduced in 2026. However, it features significant aerodynamic updates, including completely redesigned front and rear wings. These changes aim to reduce turbulent airflow, allowing drivers to follow more closely and facilitating more overtaking opportunities. The design also brings the car's aesthetic closer to modern Formula 1 styling.
Key technical updates include the introduction of an on-board starter motor, developed by Hewland. This system will allow drivers to restart the car after stalling or spinning on track, reducing race interruptions. The car will continue to use the 3.4-litre Mecachrome turbo V6 engine, powered by advanced sustainable fuel from Aramco, and will utilize Pirelli tires. FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem and F2 CEO Bruno Michel emphasized that the project focuses on improving safety, accessibility, and driver preparation for the transition to Formula 1.
