Formula E introduces Gen4 race formats and flexible scheduling

Formula E is introducing significant changes for its Gen4 era, involving both scheduling flexibility and new race formats. Due to geopolitical uncertainties, the championship may adjust its start date and location. While the season is intended to begin in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, in mid-December, the series has prepared a contingency plan to move the opening event to Mexico City on January 16 if regional conditions prevent the Saudi race from occurring.

Technically, the Gen4 car will feature two distinct racing formats starting in the 2026/27 season to showcase different aspects of the vehicle. The ‘E-Prix Unleashed’ format will be a 30-minute sprint using high-downforce aerodynamics to highlight the car’s raw power, including its all-wheel-drive system and rapid acceleration.

In contrast, the conventional 45-minute E-Prix will utilize low-downforce bodywork to prioritize energy efficiency and drag reduction. While the sprint format aims to demonstrate the car’s performance, some drivers, such as Andretti Formula E’s Jake Dennis, suggest that the emphasis on speed may offer fewer technical lessons regarding energy management and efficiency compared to traditional races.
