Formula E Gen4 era transitions

Overview

Formula E is preparing for a technological and structural transition with the introduction of the Gen4 car. This new generation of vehicles will feature permanent all-wheel drive and a power increase to 816 PS (600 kW).

To showcase different technical aspects of the Gen4 car, the series will introduce two racing formats for the 2026/27 season. The ‘E-Prix Unleashed’ format will be a 30-minute sprint using high-downforce aerodynamics to highlight acceleration and power, while the conventional 45-minute E-Prix will use low-downforce bodywork to prioritize energy efficiency.

Regarding logistics, the championship is maintaining scheduling flexibility due to geopolitical uncertainties. While the season is intended to begin in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, in mid-December, a contingency plan exists to move the opening event to Mexico City on January 16 if necessary. The upcoming season is also expected to feature an expanded calendar of 21 races across 13 cities.

In terms of driver diversity, Chief Executive Jeff Dodds has announced an ambition to have female drivers competing at the championship level within the next two to three years. This initiative involves expanding the existing women’s program to create more direct opportunities for women to enter the grid.
