Enterprise AI adoption faces ROI and data readiness challenges

Recent industry research highlights a significant gap between artificial intelligence investment and measurable business returns. While 90% of technology leaders expect to increase investments in agentic AI over the next 12 months, only 37% report strong positive returns to date. A primary bottleneck identified is data fragmentation and a lack of enterprise-wide data readiness.

Reports indicate that 77% of executives find that 20% or less of their enterprise data is sufficiently contextualized for AI agents. Furthermore, 78% of leaders struggle to unify data across business functions. This lack of data maturity is compounded by the need for trustworthy AI practices; organizations that implement these practices have a 15 times higher probability of achieving high ROI.

Investment patterns also reveal a divide between market leaders and others. High-growth organizations allocate 53% of their IT budgets to modernization, compared to just 19% for less mature peers. Meanwhile, the scale of infrastructure spending is accelerating, with tech giants' AI-related capital expenditure expected to exceed $700 billion by 2026.
