Brazilian cities launch free neutering and pet care programs

In Sorocaba, the municipal environment secretariat opened online registrations for free sterilisation of dogs and cats in July. Slots are limited; applicants must provide proof of residence and identity. The service includes microchipping of the animals.

Fortaleza’s Secretariat of Animal Protection started a VetMóvel operation on 23 June in the Bom Jardim and Messejana neighbourhoods. The mobile unit offers free veterinary consultations, rabies vaccination, examinations and neutering for dogs and cats until 4 July, with a daily quota of 40 appointments.

Cuiabá’s animal‑welfare secretariat organised a free canine vaccination mutirão on 20 June at the municipal kennel. Dogs receive polivalent and rabies shots, and the event also features a pet‑adoption fair and guidance on responsible ownership. No prior appointment is required.

In São João Batista, Santa Catarina, the state‑run “Pet Levado a Sério” programme began on 22 June, providing 147 free castrations and microchip implants for low‑income pet owners. A total of 881 municipal slots are scheduled for early July.
