Brazil rescues 62‑year‑old woman from 55 years of domestic slavery in Fortaleza

Authorities in Fortaleza, Ceará, rescued a 62‑year‑old woman who had been held in conditions of domestic slavery for 55 years. The victim began working for a wealthy family at age seven in 1971 and remained in servitude for three generations, receiving no salary, vacation, or basic rights and living in near‑total isolation. After an anonymous tip, police freed her in July 2026. The family’s current employers reached an agreement with the Brazilian Public Ministry to pay 50,000 reais, provide a fully furnished apartment and continue social‑security contributions until retirement. The woman will receive psychosocial support while plans are made for her independent living.

In a related case, labor inspectors rescued a male farmhand and his family in Aquiraz, also near Fortaleza, who had lived without formal employment contracts for 18 years. The employer signed a Conduct Adjustment Agreement with the Ministry of Labor, acknowledging irregularities and owing roughly 180,000 reais in unpaid wages, overtime and benefits.

Following the high‑profile rescue, the Fortaleza city hall dismissed a municipal employee linked to the case and terminated a woman involved in the household’s management, underscoring institutional actions against modern‑slavery practices.
