Fortaleza Metro adds women‑only cars on Line South
Metrofor has equipped every train on Fortaleza's Line South with two dedicated women‑only carriages, accounting for roughly one‑third of each train. The cars are clearly sign‑posted and can be used at any time from Monday to Saturday throughout the line's operating hours. The measure is intended to curb sexual harassment on public transport and is optional; women may still sit in mixed‑gender carriages if they prefer.
Metrofor is conducting an initial education campaign, with staff present at stations and on trains to guide passengers and enforce the new rule. After this period, routine monitoring will continue to ensure compliance. The initiative follows rising concerns about harassment in the city's transit system and mirrors similar policies previously adopted in other Brazilian cities.
Local reactions are mixed, with many praising the step toward greater safety for female commuters, while others question its long‑term effectiveness.
