Palermo marks 34th anniversary of Via d'Amelio massacre, honoring Paolo Borsellino

On July 19, 2026, Italy commemorates the 34th anniversary of the Via d'Amelio bombing that killed magistrate Paolo Borsellino and five members of his escort. Ceremonies are held across Palermo, including a wreath‑laying at the Questura's escort office, a minute of silence, and speeches by national politicians such as Giuseppe Conte and President of the Region Renato Schifani. Cultural events organised by the Network Giovani Sicilia, the Movement Agende Rosse and parliamentary groups feature open‑mic debates on legality, a “Parlate di mafia” symposium, and a series of talks on truth and justice. Schools and community programmes, like Libera’s “Organizziamo la speranza” initiative, are highlighted as part of a broader effort to link memory with preventive education in the city’s peripheral districts. Additional commemorations occur in other towns, including a memorial ceremony for officer Emanuela Loi in Belluno and a music‑and‑spoken‑word tribute in Torretta Granitola. Together the activities aim to keep the victims’ legacy alive, reinforce public commitment to the rule of law, and encourage new generations to confront organised crime.
