Italy mafia bombing memorials

In July 2026 Italy marked two separate anniversaries of notorious Cosa Nostra bombings, underscoring a continued national focus on remembering victims and reinforcing anti‑mafia resolve.

In Palermo, officials commemorated the 34th anniversary of the Via d'Amelio bombing that killed magistrate Paolo Borsellino and his escort. A wreath‑laying ceremony, a minute of silence, speeches by figures such as Giuseppe Conte and Renato Schifani, and cultural events—including open‑mic debates, a “Parlate di mafia” symposium, and school programmes—were organised to link memory with preventive education.

A week later, Milan observed the 33rd anniversary of the 1993 Via Palestro attack, which claimed five lives, including a fireman and police officers. Regional deputy president Ruggero Invernizzi and Mayor Beppe Sala attended, reiterating that the victims’ memory must sustain a renewed commitment to legality, justice, and the fight against organised crime.

Both commemorations illustrate Italy’s ongoing effort to keep the legacy of anti‑mafia victims alive and to promote a culture of legality across the country.
