Four bishops consecrated by Society of Saint Pius X in Écône, Switzerland
On 1 July 2026 the Society of Saint Pius X (FSSPX) performed the episcopal consecration of four new bishops at its seminary in Écône, Switzerland. The ceremony follows the traditionalist line of the fraternity, which rejects post‑Vatican II reforms such as the vernacular liturgy and collegial episcopal governance.
The consecrations continue the practice begun in 1988 when the society, founded by Marcel Lefebvre, ordained bishops without a papal mandate. The newly appointed prelates will serve within the FSSPX hierarchy, preserving the Tridentine Mass and the society’s independent clerical structure.
