Four Franco-era victims exhumed from Beira mass grave in Carral, Spain

Archaeologists from the University of Santiago de Compostela (Histagra group) and the Diputación de A Coruña have uncovered four bodies in the Beira mass grave near the parish church of Carral, Galicia. The remains show clear signs of violence and will undergo forensic and DNA testing to facilitate identification by families. Historical research indicates at least 18 people were buried there after the 1936 coup and subsequent Francoist repression. The exhumation is part of a 2025 agreement covering three graves in the region and is coordinated by historians Lourenzo Fernández Prieto, Antonio Míguez Macho and forensic specialist Edgard Camarós. Civil‑rights deputy Sol Agra emphasized that locating the remains “represents an important step to restore truth and dignity” for the victims and their descendants.
