Immigration Department driver pleads not guilty in fatal Kuala Lumpur crash
A fatal traffic accident involving an Immigration Department Black Maria truck occurred at the Maju Junction intersection on Jalan Sultan Ismail in Kuala Lumpur. The incident, which took place around 1:00 AM, resulted in the deaths of three members of a single family: 53-year-old Shaik Mohd Firdaus Shaik Yahya and his daughters, aged 25 and 12.
Initial investigations indicate the Immigration truck, which was traveling to Chow Kit to collect undocumented migrants, entered the intersection while the traffic light was red, despite its siren and beacon being activated. A Proton Saga traveling through the intersection on a green light collided with the truck, causing the vehicle to lose control and strike four pedestrians and another car.
The driver of the Immigration truck, 43-year-old Mohd Akbar Zainol, has pleaded not guilty in the Kuala Lumpur High Court to five charges, including dangerous driving causing death and failing to obey traffic signals. The court has set bail at RM12,000 for each charge, totaling RM60,000. The 55-year-old wife of the deceased, who was also injured in the crash, remains in stable condition at Kuala Lumpur Hospital.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has ordered an immediate investigation into the incident, stating there will be no compromise regarding negligence or breaches of the law.
