Four Migrant Farm Workers Burned Alive in Calabria, Italy

In the Calabria region of southern Italy, four migrant farm workers – three Afghans and one Pakistani – were locked inside a van and set on fire at a roadside gas station on State Road 106 near Amendolara. Security footage captured two Pakistani men approaching the vehicle, blocking the doors and pouring an accelerant before igniting it. One survivor escaped by breaking a window, sustaining severe burns.

The victims had been working in strawberry fields and reportedly refused to pay a small extortion demand of five euros per person. The two suspects were arrested the same night in Villapiana after police reviewed the surveillance video. Italian authorities have charged them with aggravated multiple homicide. The incident has prompted condemnation from Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and heightened calls from unions and the Italian Episcopal Conference to address the exploitation of migrant laborers in the country's agricultural sector.
