Four Migrant Farmworkers Burned Alive in Amendolara, Italy, Prompting Anti‑Caporalato Protests

Four migrant agricultural workers—Waseem, Amin, Ullah and Safi—were burned alive in Amendolara, a town in the province of Cosenza, Calabria. The victims were part of a labour force exploited through the illegal caporalato system, which pays below collective‑contract rates, imposes endless hours, and provides no safety measures.

The tragedy ignited calls for action from activist groups such as Libera Calabria and Usb Calabria. They condemned the exploitative system and announced a public demonstration in Amendolara’s square on Saturday, 6 June, demanding an end to caporalato and reforms of immigration‑linked labour legislation.
