Four migrants injured in Calabria shantytown fire
A large fire broke out yesterday night in a shantytown in the Boscarello area of Schiavonea, a frazione of Corigliano‑Rossano in the province of Cosenza, Calabria. The settlement, which houses many seasonal agricultural migrants, saw four people suffer burns, one of them in serious condition and transferred to a hospital in Brindisi for intensive care.
Police officers from the Corigliano‑Rossano police headquarters and local Carabinieri rescued the injured migrants and prevented further casualties. The fire was worsened by the explosion of a gas cylinder, prompting a rapid response from the Corigliano‑Rossano fire brigade, which worked through the night to extinguish the blaze and secure the area. The State Police have opened an investigation to determine the cause of the fire and assess any responsibility.
