Fourni residents hold maritime funeral for Mayor Dimitris Karydis

Residents of the Fourni islands in the Corsica group held a ceremonial farewell for Mayor Dimitris Karydis, who passed away at the age of 57 after a battle with cancer.

On Wednesday, the ship ‘Megalocharis’ transported the mayor's body to the island, accompanied by a procession of smaller boats and fishing vessels. The maritime tribute included the sounding of ship horns and the use of orange smoke flares. Hundreds of mourners, including relatives, colleagues, and local officials, gathered at the port to escort the coffin to the church.

The funeral service was held at the Holy Church of Agios Nikolaos in Fourni, presided over by the Metropolitan of Samos, Ikaria, and Corsica, Eusebios. Karydis had served as the mayor of Fourni since December 2020.
