French opposition blames government for inadequate wildfire response
More than 116,000 hectares of forest have burned in France this year, with over 13,500 fire incidents recorded since the start of the year. Opposition deputies, including LFI member Hadryën Klue and Socialist MP Philippe Brun, accuse President Emmanuel Macron’s government of state negligence and of cancelling the purchase of two Canadair firefighting aircraft while postponing the acquisition of Super Puma helicopters. Klue demanded an emergency session of the National Assembly, proposed that wealth‑tax (ISF) revenue be used to fund the Canadair planes, and suggested ordering A400M transport aircraft equipped with water‑tank systems. The government, represented by spokesperson Maud Bregeon, countered that the civil‑security budget has essentially doubled from about €400 million in 2017 to over €800 million today and that resources have been "massively increased." Parliamentary reports by deputies Sophie Pantel and Damien Maudet claim that existing firefighting means are no longer sufficient, calling for modernization, additional aerial assets and a new law to reform departmental fire‑and‑rescue services.
