France advances naval modernization amid aircraft deliveries and frigate delays

The French Navy has received its first two Falcon 2000 Albatros maritime surveillance and intervention aircraft. Delivered in July 2026, these Dassault Aviation platforms are assigned to Flottille 24F at the Lann-Bihoué naval aeronautical base in Brittany.

These aircraft are part of the AVSIMAR program, which aims to deploy a total of 12 Albatros planes to modernize the fleet. They will replace the aging Falcon 50 M and Falcon 200 Gardian models. The program intends to deliver subsequent aircraft at a rate of two per year, eventually incorporating drones to meet full surveillance objectives.

Separately, the deployment of France’s FDI-class frigates faces delays. The flagship vessel, Admiral Ronarc’h, which was delivered by Naval Group in October 2025, is experiencing setbacks in reaching full operational status. Technical maintenance and postponed Aster missile testing have pushed critical certification phases toward the end of the decade, impacting the ship’s role in NATO strategic mobility.
