French naval modernization and AVSIMAR program
Overview
The French Navy is undergoing a modernization process through the AVSIMAR program, which focuses on replacing aging Falcon 50 M and Falcon 200 Gardian models with new maritime surveillance platforms.
In July 2026, the French Directorate General of Armaments (DGA) received the first two Falcon 2000 Albatros maritime surveillance and intervention aircraft. Developed by Dassault Aviation in collaboration with Naval Group, Safran, and Thales, these aircraft are equipped with advanced technology such as Thales SearchMaster electronic scanning radars and Safran EuroFLIR 410 optical sensors. The program aims to deliver a total of twelve units by 2031, with subsequent aircraft expected at a rate of two per year. These assets will support operations in Brittany, Tahiti, and New Caledonia.
Parallel to the aircraft deliveries, the deployment of France’s FDI-class frigates has encountered setbacks. The flagship vessel, Admiral Ronarc’h, is experiencing delays in reaching full operational status due to technical maintenance and postponed Aster missile testing, with critical certification phases expected toward the end of the decade.
