France and Ireland lead efforts to ban trade from Israeli settlements

France has announced plans to ban trade in products originating from Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot stated the decision aims to address tensions that threaten the prospects for a two-state solution. While the intent has been declared, the specific modalities and the timeline for implementation of the French ban have not yet been finalized.

In a related development, Ireland has become the first European Union member state to implement a ban on goods imported from Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories. The legislation, signed into law by President Catherine Connolly, makes the importation of such goods a customs offense. The Irish government is now calling on the European Commission to consider an EU-wide trade ban, though some member states, such as Germany, have expressed opposition to such a measure.
