Italy weather alert: Atlantic storm brings heavy rain and thunderstorms

An Atlantic weather system is moving across Italy, bringing significant instability, heavy rainfall, and a notable drop in temperatures, particularly in the northern regions. The Civil Protection Department has issued orange alerts for Liguria and Emilia-Romagna due to the risk of intense thunderstorms. In Liguria, specifically in the Savona province, several municipalities have ordered school closures to ensure safety during the storm.

Forecasts indicate that while the South remains temporarily protected by high pressure with temperatures reaching up to 30°C, the instability will gradually move southward. By Friday and through the weekend, the weather system is expected to impact central and southern areas, including Campania and Sicily. In the north, temperatures are expected to drop by at least 5°C.

Additional long-term reports suggest a potentially very rainy October for the Mediterranean, with higher than average precipitation expected in the central basin and southern Italy. Meanwhile, some regions are seeing relief from previous drought conditions, such as the Po River district, following recent rainfall.
