France and Spain battle record forest fires amid heatwave

Intensive firefighting efforts are underway in southwestern France and western Spain as unprecedented forest fires rage across the region. In France, near Bordeaux in the Gironde department, the blaze has engulfed about 42,000 hectares, destroyed roughly 240 homes and forced the evacuation of around 220,000 residents. Spain’s fires, concentrated around Avila west of Madrid, have scorched some 77,000 hectares, displaced about 60,000 people and razed dozens of houses.

The French fire generated a pyrocumulonimbus, or “fire cloud,” – the first such observation in France – creating its own weather, producing lightning and strong winds that complicate suppression. President Emmanuel Macron warned of “very difficult weeks ahead,” while Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez described the blazes as the most painful symptom of the climate emergency. Meteorological agencies forecast temperatures of up to 40‑42 °C with dry winds, intensifying the risk of further fires.
