Europe faces growing wildfire risk and insurance protection gap
Europe is facing severe economic and humanitarian challenges due to intensifying wildfires and extreme heatwaves. Major blazes in France and Spain have caused massive evacuations, including over 220,000 people in France, and significant property destruction.
In Spain, a wildfire in the Ávila region became the largest on record, burning approximately 50,000 hectares. Greece has also suffered heavily, with reports of three firefighters dying in the line of duty during intense fire fighting efforts.
Insurers are warning of a widening "protection gap," as the cost of natural disasters increasingly outstrips current coverage. Allianz Commercial data shows that insurance payouts for forest fires surged from $8.7 billion in the 2000s to $56.3 billion in the 2010s. Sectors such as energy, real estate, construction, agriculture, and transport are most at risk.
Industry leaders, including Zurich Insurance Group CEO Mario Greco, note that while many weather-related risks are insurable, governments and local authorities have not yet implemented the systemic interventions necessary to mitigate these increasing threats.
