France and Spain wildfires force mass evacuations of over 300,000 people FAST-MOVING
Massive forest fires are raging in southwest France (Gironde and Landes) and central Spain (Madrid, Ávila, Toledo and Valencia). The blazes have burned roughly 42,000 hectares in France and about 77,000 hectares in Spain, creating giant pyrocumulonimbus fire‑clouds that generate strong winds and lightning.
More than 300,000 residents have been forced to leave their homes – around 260,000 in France and up to 120,000 in Spain – while authorities have imposed a state of emergency and extended it to additional provinces. French President Emmanuel Macron convened a crisis cabinet meeting and Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez visited the fire‑hit areas around Ávila. The European Union has deployed aircraft, personnel and equipment to assist both countries. Casualties include at least two French firefighters dead, 75 injured, and one civilian death in Spain; at least 19 people were injured by smoke inhalation in Vall d’Uixo.
Tourist sites in the Gironde department have seen the suspension of holiday camps and an appeal for visitors to avoid the region, while thousands of firefighters, soldiers and police continue the suppression effort under extreme heat, dry ground and gusty winds.
