France and Switzerland turn to eco‑building solutions as heatwaves intensify

In France, rising heatwaves have spurred a push for ecological buildings that rely on passive design to keep interiors cool. The RE2020 regulation now requires new constructions to address summer comfort, using high‑performance insulation, shading devices, natural ventilation and bio‑based materials such as wood, hemp and earth. Experts estimate that about half of the country's ten million buildings are ill‑suited to extreme heat, prompting retro‑fit programmes that incorporate green roofs, vegetated facades and smart ventilation systems.

Switzerland faces a similar challenge as its housing stock, historically designed for winter, proves vulnerable to prolonged heat. Professionals note that energy‑renovation measures alone may not suffice, urging a shift in construction culture to consider summer conditions. The debate highlights the limits of existing renovation strategies and the need for broader design changes to protect tenants from overheating and related rent disputes.
