France apple harvests projected at decade low
French apple production is projected to reach its lowest level in a decade, with an estimated harvest of 1.16 million tons. This decline follows heatwaves in 2026 and significant aphid pressure during 2025. Additionally, water access issues and high temperatures are expected to result in smaller fruit sizes.
In response to rising production costs—driven by inflation, minimum wage increases, and geopolitical tensions in the Gulf region—the Association Nationale Pommes Poires (ANPP) is calling for price increases. Growers are requesting a hike of 0.35 euro per kg from distributors, wholesalers, and the catering industry to ensure they have the funds necessary to renew orchards.
In contrast to the apple outlook, pear production in France shows more optimistic trends. The ANPP expects pear harvests to rise to 76,000 tons, while WAPA forecasts total French pear production at 132,000 tons, supported by increased plantings over the last decade.
