French agricultural production declines
Overview
Agricultural production in France is facing declines across multiple sectors due to adverse weather conditions and rising costs.
In September, apple harvests were projected to reach a decade low of approximately 1.16 million tons, driven by previous aphid pressure and recent heatwaves. These conditions, alongside water access issues, have also impacted fruit size. To combat rising production costs linked to inflation and geopolitical tensions, growers have requested price increases of 0.35 euro per kg.
By October, reports indicated that honey production was also suffering a significant drop due to intense heatwaves and drought. Extreme temperatures in late spring and early summer deprived bees of nectar. While estimates vary, industry groups like Unaf project a yield as low as 18,000 to 20,000 tonnes, down from previous years. This scarcity is expected to drive up retail prices for popular varieties such as lavender and acacia honey.
