France groundwater crisis: Aquifer levels drop below seasonal norms

France is facing a severe groundwater crisis as the Bureau de recherches géologiques et minières (BRGM) reports that 66% of monitoring points are below seasonal norms as of October 1. The situation is worsening, with 81% of levels continuing to decline and only 7% showing any signs of recovery.

Authorities have implemented various restrictions to preserve drinking water. In the Charente department, an enhanced alert has been issued, prohibiting activities such as watering lawns, washing vehicles at home, and filling private pools. In Finistère, officials have warned of imminent drinking water cutoffs, advising residents to reduce daily water usage by approximately 50% to prevent service interruptions.

The BRGM notes that the lack of effective rainfall is preventing aquifer recharge due to parched soil, high evapotranspiration, and a cumulative precipitation deficit. The current situation is described as being as concerning as the exceptional drought of 2022.
