Gironde megafire in southwest France stabilises, thousands return home
The forest fire that swept the Gironde department in southwest France—the worst in the country since 1949—has been largely contained after more than a week of intense fighting. Authorities say the blaze has consumed roughly 42,000 ha of forest, with two hot spots still active near Lacanau and Claouey. About 144,000 residents have been allowed to return to their homes, while the fire‑season tourism economy remains crippled.
Fire‑fighting resources included 24 aerial assets, seven of them supplied through the EU solidarity mechanism, and roughly 3,300 firefighters, 1,500 military personnel and 1,250 police/gendarmerie. No deaths have been recorded, but 230 firefighters were injured. The Department Prefect Sophie Brocas and Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez noted an “optimistic” shift but warned that the region faces a longer‑term reconstruction and economic crisis, especially for hospitality and local businesses.
