Lyon and Alpine sites confirmed for 2030 Winter Olympics

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has validated the venue distribution for the 2030 Winter Olympics in France. Following a coordination commission visit to Lyon, the ice sports cluster has been officially confirmed for the Lyon metropolitan area.

Ice hockey matches will be held at the LDLC Arena in Décines-Charpieu and the Halle Tony Garnier. The Eurexpo exhibition center will host curling, figure skating, synchronized skating, and short-track speed skating, while also serving as the main media center. The Olympic village for this cluster is planned for Oullins-Pierre-Bénite.

In the Alps, Courchevel is designated for alpine speed events, including the downhill and Super-G, while Val d'Isère will host technical disciplines such as the giant slalom and slalom.

Despite the official progress, the project faces political and environmental opposition. Critics have raised concerns regarding the ecological impact and the use of water for artificial snow. However, French Sports Minister Marina Ferrari stated that France will honor its commitment to host the Games regardless of future political changes.
