2030 Winter Olympics preparations in France

Overview

Preparations for the 2030 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games in France continue through infrastructure development and venue finalization. Following a coordination commission visit, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) officially validated the venue distribution. The Lyon metropolitan area is confirmed as the ice sports cluster, with ice hockey matches set for the LDLC Arena and Halle Tony Garnier. Eurexpo will host curling, figure skating, synchronized skating, and short-track speed skating, while also acting as the primary media center. The planned Olympic village for these events is located in Oullins-Pierre-Bénite.

In the Alps, Courchevel is designated for alpine speed events, such as downhill and Super-G, while Val d'Isère will host technical disciplines including the giant slalom and slalom.

Organizational leadership remains in transition following the departure of Edgar Grospiron on September 10. Director General Vincent Roberti continues to serve as interim president under amended statutes while the committee seeks a permanent successor.

On the delivery side, Solideo, the agency overseeing Olympic works, is managing approximately forty projects, including sports facilities, athlete villages, and decarbonized mobility infrastructure. Solideo Director General Damien Robert noted that despite intense public consultations, the organization faces “highly constrained timelines.” The objective is to conclude consultation and authorization phases by 2026 to initiate major construction, such as cable transport and Olympic villages.

Despite progress, the project faces ongoing political and environmental opposition regarding ecological impacts and water usage for artificial snow. French Sports Minister Marina Ferrari has maintained that France will honor its commitment to host the Games regardless of political changes.
