France confirms first Ebola case in doctor from DRC
France’s health ministry announced on 24 June that a doctor who had been working in the Democratic Republic of Congo tested positive for Ebola, marking the first confirmed case on French mainland. The patient, who returned to Paris after humanitarian work, is reported to be in a stable condition with mild fever and symptoms.
World Health Organization Director‑General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said, “The risk for the rest of the world remains low,” adding that the case serves as “a reminder of the risks faced by frontline workers.” He noted that around 80 medical volunteers have been infected globally. WHO also announced upcoming clinical trials of two experimental drugs—MPP‑134 and remdesivir—targeting the Bongo‑bujyo strain of the virus, involving roughly a thousand patients in the DRC. French Prime Minister Sébastien LéÂcurne said his government is monitoring the situation closely.
