France considers drought loans for farmers

The French government is considering the implementation of guaranteed or subsidized ‘drought loans’ to assist farmers facing significant losses due to heatwaves and water scarcity. Agriculture Minister Annie Genevard stated that these loans are intended to help producers bridge the gap to their next harvest cycles after losing crops or livestock due to dry conditions.

In addition to potential loans, the government plans to strengthen the national solidarity indemnity for those unable to access traditional insurance. Further fiscal measures may be proposed during the next budget cycle. The final scale and amount of the global aid plan are expected to be determined following a meeting of prefects on August 27.

These measures follow growing distress among farmers, as drought impacts both crop yields and animal production by reducing available forage. Arnaud Rousseau, president of the FNSEA, previously noted that the economic impact of these climate conditions could require billions of euros in emergency aid.
