France to extend fuel subsidies for vulnerable sectors and commuters
The French government has announced its intention to extend fuel subsidies for sectors most vulnerable to rising energy costs. Energy Minister Maud Bregeon stated that the administration will not close application portals for companies facing difficulties, promising to provide further details on the duration and scale of these extensions in the coming days.
This announcement follows the August 31, 2026, deadline for the 100-euro fuel indemnity aimed at “grands rouleurs” (high-mileage commuters). Approximately 1.4 million people have applied for this aid so far, representing less than half of the nearly 3 million eligible individuals. To qualify, applicants must be tax residents of France, have earned a specific income threshold in 2024, and meet minimum commuting distance or annual mileage requirements using thermal or non-rechargeable hybrid vehicles.
The push for continued assistance comes amid rising oil prices. Following recent military strikes in the Middle East, Brent crude prices rose to approximately 90.19 dollars per barrel, driving pump prices for diesel and unleaded fuel toward the 2-euro mark. The government aims to support specific industries, including fishermen, farmers, and transporters, to mitigate these economic impacts.
