France rejects general fuel aid as prices hit record highs
Overview
The French government has maintained its refusal to implement new general fuel subsidies or price caps, citing the need for fiscal rigor. Instead, the state continues to provide 1.4 billion euros in targeted aid for specific sectors such as agriculture, fishing, and construction, alongside support for low-income, high-mileage drivers.
Fuel prices remain at historic highs due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, which have kept Brent crude above $100 per barrel. Diesel averages 2.29 euros per liter, while E10 gasoline averages 2.12 euros per liter. These costs have led to localized supply disruptions and long queues, particularly at TotalEnergies stations where consumers have sought to utilize existing temporary price caps.
The economic burden is intensifying, especially in rural areas where 16.7% of motorized households are highly exposed to costs, compared to 9.0% in urban environments. In these rural regions, households spend an average of 2,700 euros annually on fuel, nearly double the national average of 1,380 euros. Data from INSEE shows that nearly 5 million French households now spend more than one month’s worth of annual income on fuel.
In response to these pressures, some motorists are turning to unconventional alternatives to reduce expenses. Some diesel vehicle owners, particularly those with older engines, have begun mixing diesel with rapeseed oil or using filtered cooking oil collected from businesses. While acknowledging the practice is not legal, some drivers report using these methods to save approximately 70 cents per liter.
