France corn production faces 50% drop in 2026 harvest
French corn producers are facing a catastrophic 2026 season, with grain corn harvests expected to drop by approximately 50% compared to 2025. The Association générale des producteurs de maïs (AGPM) and the technical institute Arvalis estimate the harvest at roughly 7 million tonnes, down from 13.7 million tonnes the previous year.
This decline is attributed to reduced cultivated areas, severe drought, and intense heatwaves, particularly during the critical flowering period in late June. The financial impact is significant, with estimated losses for producers reaching 2.5 billion euros.
In response, the AGPM and other agricultural associations are calling for government assistance of 450 euros per hectare to support farms and prepare for the 2027 season. They are also seeking nationwide exemptions from certain cover crop requirements to alleviate financial and soil-moisture pressures on farmers.
