France data center sector faces energy and modernization challenges

Data center operations in France are facing increased scrutiny regarding their economic benefits versus their resource consumption. In 2024, 471 metropolitan installations consuming more than 1 gigawatt-hour annually used a total of 4.3 terawatt-hours of electricity. This represents approximately 1% to 1.5% of France's total electricity consumption. Experts suggest that evaluating the true economic gain requires balancing investments and job creation against the use of land, water, and electrical grid capacity.

In a specific technical development, SPIE Building Solutions has completed a modernization of the Direction nationale des statistiques du commerce extérieur (DNSCE) data center in Toulouse. The project was executed without interrupting server operations, ensuring the continuous availability of sensitive data regarding French trade flows. The upgrade included implementing high-efficiency cooling systems, optimizing temperature regimes, and utilizing a reuse policy for existing equipment to reduce the carbon footprint and manage waste responsibly.
