France debates medical conscience clauses amid abortion and assisted‑dying law

The French National College of Gynecologists and Obstetricians (CNGOF) has asked that the specific conscience clause for voluntary termination of pregnancy (IVG) be removed, arguing it is redundant with the general medical conscience provision. The move comes as France prepares to implement a new assisted‑dying law that also includes a distinct conscience clause for health‑care professionals.

A nationwide survey (StopVOG) conducted between July and December 2025 collected over 10,000 responses from French women. It found that 81 % reported at least one breach of consent during gynecological examinations, with many describing pain, lack of explanation, and difficulty refusing procedures. The results highlight widespread concerns about patient autonomy in French gynecology.
