Mass Evacuations as Gironde Wildfire Threatens Bordeaux, Over 200,000 Displaced

A massive wildfire has ripped through the Gironde department in southwestern France, rapidly advancing toward the Bordeaux metropolitan area. The blaze, fed by extreme heat and high winds, generated a rare pyrocumulonimbus "firestorm" cloud that carried embers ahead of the main front.

French authorities have ordered successive evacuations across dozens of communes, including Marcheprime, Cestas and other villages west of Bordeaux. Cumulative figures now exceed 200,000 people displaced, with the prefecture reporting about 110,000 evacuated at one point and later updates citing 167,000 to 197,000. Temporary shelters such as the Bordeaux Lake exhibition centre have been set up for thousands of evacuees.

Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu convened an emergency cabinet meeting, joined by Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez, Defence, Health and Transport ministers. The government has deployed roughly 1,500 troops, additional aircraft and aerial water‑dropping resources to support firefighting crews. The fire has burned roughly 140,000‑150,000 hectares of forest and farmland.

Two firefighters have died in the effort, and police have begun prosecuting individuals caught lighting fires or smoking in the affected forests. The situation remains volatile, with officials warning that the fire could still reach Bordeaux if wind conditions worsen.
