Gironde and Landes forest fires trigger major recovery efforts

Following massive forest fires in the Gironde and Landes regions of France in July 2026, which destroyed approximately 43,400 hectares, extensive recovery and reconstruction efforts are underway.

Administrative decrees have officially recognized the large-scale disaster, allowing private forest owners to bypass standard formalities to clear burned wood and secure parcels. The forestry sector, represented by Fibois Landes de Gascogne, has mobilized significant resources, including 200 forest machines, but warns that the industry—which supports 34,000 jobs—is being weakened by repeated crises.

Community and professional responses have been widespread. Civilian reserves in Bordeaux, trained to manage emergencies, have provided essential aid to evacuees. Additionally, the Federation of French Doctors (FMF) has called for greater legal recognition and support for private healthcare professionals who worked in extreme conditions during the crisis. The long-term focus remains on reforestation and managing the environmental and economic impacts of the charred landscapes.
