France details documents and categories required for driving licences
The French administration outlines the paperwork needed to obtain or renew a driving licence. Applicants must complete Cerfa form 14880*01 and, when a medical exam is required, Cerfa form 14880*02. Required documents include a valid identity card or passport, a recent proof of address, a compliant passport‑style photo, the current licence (for renewals), and, for professional licences, the vehicle registration certificate. The medical questionnaire must be filled out by the driver, not the physician, to avoid appointment delays.
France also explains the classification of licences. Category B covers cars up to 3.5 t and light utility vehicles; B E extends this to heavy trailers over 750 kg when the combined weight exceeds 4 250 kg. Category B1 applies to heavy quadricycles. Motorcycle licences are split into A1 (up to 125 cm³), A2 (up to 35 kW), and A (no power limit), with specific age thresholds and progression rules. These details help applicants understand the rights and restrictions attached to each licence type.
