French driving licence requirements and exam procedures

In late July 2026, French authorities released guidance on obtaining a category B driving licence. The process involves administrative formalities, identity and residence documentation, and choosing between a driving school or supervised driving. Preparation for the theory exam is encouraged through daily study sessions, mobile apps, and mock tests. For drivers whose licences are annulled, lost, or suspended for six months or more, a psychotechnical test is mandatory. Regulated by article R224-21 of the Code de la route, this test includes a psychologist interview and computer-based exercises evaluating reflexes, attention, and motor coordination. Approximately 150,000 candidates take this exam annually, with costs between €65 and €150 and results valid for six months.

Applicants must also provide a valid identity card or passport, proof of address, and passport-style photos. Licence classifications cover category B (cars up to 3.5 t), B E (heavy trailers), B1 (heavy quadricycles), and A-series motorcycle licences (A1, A2, and A) with specific age and power thresholds.

Recent updates emphasize the importance of using current study materials for the practical exam to avoid errors from obsolete resources. Since the 2018 reform, the oral examination includes vehicle verification, road safety questions, and first aid knowledge.
