France Confirms First Imported Ebola Case, Isolates Patient and Five Passengers
France announced that a doctor who returned from a humanitarian mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo tested positive for the Ebola virus. The patient was isolated immediately on arrival at a specialised hospital and is reported to be in stable condition with a low viral load. French health authorities have begun contact tracing and placed five passengers who shared the same Air France flight in isolation for a 21‑day monitoring period. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) highlighted that the risk of sustained transmission in the EU remains very low provided early detection, isolation and treatment are maintained. The World Health Organization notes that the current outbreak in the DRC, caused by the rare Bundibugyo strain, has recorded over 1,000 cases and around 270 deaths, with no approved vaccine for this strain. An AI‑driven outbreak‑visibility system (LOVS) estimates that the true number of cases in the DRC could be between 2,200 and 4,000, underscoring the importance of robust surveillance. French officials continue to monitor the situation closely while reassuring the public that the overall risk to the wider population is minimal.
