France's 2026 tourism season remains strong despite budget constraints and fire impacts

Domestic tourism in France continues to dominate holiday travel in 2026. Even with tighter household budgets, French travellers favour stays within the country, shortening trips, choosing nearer destinations and often booking at the last minute. Regional occupancy figures show strong demand: Hauts‑de‑France recorded a 71 % hotel occupancy rate in July, while the Pyrénées‑Atlantiques saw hotel occupancy of 54 % in July and 59 % in August, with short‑term rentals performing slightly better.

Recent forest fires have been largely confined to limited areas. Most tourist sites, including the Bassin d'Arcachon, have reopened and are welcoming visitors, although access to the surrounding forest remains restricted for safety. A free beach near the Fontainebleau forest offers an alternative cooling spot for Parisians.

Nationally, the vacation departure rate has held steady at about 61 % for the past 35 years, though social inequalities persist, with lower‑income households less likely to take holidays. Overall, the French tourism sector shows resilience, with high occupancy, limited fire disruption, and continued domestic preference.
