French tourism recovery after Atlantic wildfires

Domestic travel in France remains robust despite tighter household budgets, with travellers shortening trips, choosing nearer destinations and often booking last‑minute self‑catering stays. The Arcachon Basin, heavily affected by recent wildfires, has reopened its main attractions such as the Dune du Pilat, beaches, boat excursions and leisure parks, while surrounding forested areas stay restricted for safety.

Tourism authorities confirm that the broader Atlantic‑coast infrastructure – beaches, campsites, holiday quarters, airports and train stations – is fully operational and water and air quality have returned to normal. Access to the most fire‑damaged zones remains limited because of falling‑tree hazards, and fire services continue to combat isolated blazes elsewhere.

In the 2026 season, regional occupancy remains high: Hauts‑de‑France recorded a 71 % hotel occupancy rate in July, and the Pyrénées‑Atlantiques reached 54 % in July and 59 % in August, with short‑term rentals performing slightly better. A free beach near the Fontainebleau forest provides an alternative cooling spot for Parisians. The national vacation‑departure rate has held steady at about 61 % for 35 years, though lower‑income households are still less likely to take holidays.

The tourism board and regional offices continue to urge foreign visitors, especially German tourists, to resume travel, offering up‑to‑date information in English online. The interior minister reported that 402 people have been detained this year on suspicion of deliberately or negligently starting fires, including 156 minors.
